Greek herbalist and founder of Asclepieion Tholos, Asklipiio, Argolida
Eleftherios Makridopoulos, who works as Mahaon, is a Greek herbalist based at Asklipiio in Argolida, a few kilometres from the ancient sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus.[1][3] He runs Asclepieion Tholos, an organisation that researches ancient and modern techniques for the cleansing of body and soul.[1]
He was born in Ilion, Attica in 1979, volunteered into the Greek special forces after finishing school, and from 2006 worked rescue missions with specialist anti-piracy and counter-terrorism units for Greek and foreign companies, completing more than forty missions in conflict zones.[1] The working name Mahaon was given to him by his teacher and companion Alkippi Maria Maragkou, after the son of Asclepius who went to Troy and was known there for both his fighting and his medicine.[1]
For more than ten years he has studied and trained toward the restoration of an ancient bioenergetic method of the Asclepieion of Epidaurus, lost for centuries.[1] He prepares the herbs himself, following the form of a Greek tradition passed from generation to generation and from teacher to student.[1]
The protocol he teaches is called Επιδαυρείν, the Epidaurean Method, also given as the Asclepian Detoxification. He teaches that the priest-healers of Epidaurus, the Asclepiads, worked a ritual sequence that prepared a patient step by step for catharsis, and that the cleansing came before anything else was attempted.[2]
His own healing came through the protocol, and it sent him to the study of botany. He received the protocol from his teacher on a single sheet of A4, and roughly seven years of research and study went into the form he now hands on.[2] He calls himself a co-driver in it and not a healer.[2]
The method opens with a three-day antiparasitic stage built on clove, cinnamon, wormwood, liquorice, nettle, mountain tea, walnut leaf, rue, fennel and mint, and proceeds through fasting, alkaline eating and light movement.[2] He holds that digestion consumes most of the body's available energy, and that a body released from it turns that energy on its own cells.[2]
Alongside the herbs sits ἐγκοίμησις, the therapeutic sleep in the Avaton of the Tholos, in which a patient came face to face with the emotional root of an illness. In its place he teaches Greek meditation as his tradition preserved it, repeated three times morning and evening.[2]

The setting was never incidental to the ancient practice: the view, the climate, the sunlight, the vegetation, the clean air, the water and the fertile ground were part of what made the treatment work.[2] He tells people doing the detoxification to walk in the archaeological sites and in nature while they do it.[2]
In 2006 he co-founded the Panhellenic Association of Greeks "Erevna", a civic body whose aim is to get citizens to find the needs of their own community together and take responsibility for meeting them.[1]
