Kevin B. Turner is Director for Asia and Oceania of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, a senior faculty member and a field research associate of the Foundation, and has been based in Bali, Indonesia for more than thirty years.[1] He began his shamanic training in 1997 under Michael Harner, the anthropologist who founded the Foundation and whose core shamanism it teaches.[1]
He has worked alongside indigenous shamans in Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, Tibet, Mexico and Peru, and in 2007 was invited to the Yucatan to help revive psychopomp practice with Mayan elders.[1] His book Sky Shamans of Mongolia, published by North Atlantic Books in 2016, is the field account of that work and has since appeared in French and Spanish.[2]
He holds a master's degree in linguistics, held an associate professorship at Sakushin Gakuin University in Japan, and has lectured at a dozen universities across Asia and America. He has also facilitated residential programmes at The Monroe Institute for more than a dozen years and is a trained remote viewer.[1]
Kevin met Michael Harner in 1997 and began his shamanic path under his mentorship.[1]
Two of his initiations sit outside the shamanic line. He has practised Kriya Yoga since 1986, initiated personally by Swami Hariharananda Giri, and he was initiated into the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism by the fourteenth Shamar Rinpoche.[1]

Before and alongside the academic work he worked for Save the Children in Cambodia, for airlines and universities in Taiwan, and for IBM in Japan.[1]
Sky Shamans of Mongolia was published by North Atlantic Books in 2016. It is part travelogue and part experiential spiritual memoir, documenting his visits to Mongolian shamans, with accounts of spontaneous medical diagnoses, all-night ceremonies and healings.[2] It has since been published in French and Spanish.[1]
A second book, The Secret Fire of Alchemy: Kriya Yoga, Kundalini, and Shamanism, is dated 2025.[1]
