Cacao ceremonialist, temazcal leader and ancestral musician, Mexico
Carlos performs as Cardan Balam, a musician and ceremonialist who fuses pre-Hispanic instruments, prayer and live electronic production. His touring project is Cardan Balam Ancestral Music.[1][2] Born in Atlixco, Puebla, he leads cacao ceremonies, temazcal and Hikuri ceremonies from his own ceremonial space in Playa del Carmen, on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán.[1]
His path crossed with Mayan culture and with Wixárika (Huichol) shamans when he was young, and he represents Wixárika, Mexica and Maya shamans today.[1] He founded Colectivo Cultura Ancestral, and with his family works to preserve Mayan lands and heritage in the Yucatán.[1]
He has released music since 2021, most of it on the Balam Music Label, and in July 2024 he led the Tribal Village at Dreamersland Festival in Poland.[5][6] In November 2023 he was one of three credited artists on Sukum Balam, a five-track electronica album on the Balam Music label.[3] His verified Instagram, @cardan_balam_musica, has more than 26,000 followers.[2]
The project is live ceremony music: "Live music Ceremonies & Ancestral sounds with Pre-Hispanic instruments, prayers, Electronic fusion live set."[1][2] His Instagram carries highlights from a World Tour 2025 and a World Tour 2026.[2]
His first release was a feature on "Perreo Cósmico," the title track of Héctor Guerra's 2021 album.[5] The Tauwerrika EP followed in July 2023, three tracks: "Tauwerrika," recorded with Marakame Juan Ortiz, "Harpmony" and "Arpa Reina Celestial."[5] Through the rest of 2023 came two Balam Ahau singles with Tako del Olmo, "Hompak Maya y Violín" with Heide Pravira Sibley, and "Hikuri Shalom" with Carmelle Levia.[5]
Sukum Balam, released in November 2023 on the Balam Music label, credits him alongside Sukum Balam and Carlos Xavier Reyes Obregón. Its five tracks include "Cantan los Marakames" ("The Marakames sing") and "Golden Teachings."[3] He also has an official Spotify artist profile.[2][4]
In 2026 he released "Sacbe" with Mushina on the Shambala label, "River Flow" with Tako del Olmo, and "Solsticio" in August, and he features on "Healing Farewell (285Hz)" on Gooral's album Sound Spa.[5]
In July 2024 Carlos brought Ancestral Culture Mexico, the group he created, to Dreamersland Festival in Ziemiary, Poland, where they held the festival's Tribal Village from 3 to 7 July.[6][7] The programme was live music and jams with guests, cacao ceremonies, and workshops in ancestral knowledge, song, dance and handmade jewellery.[6] His own trailer for the zone, filmed and edited by Anna Sandra, is scored with Balam Ahau.[7]
In his youth Carlos's path crossed with Mayan culture and with Wixárika shamans, and he stands today as a representative of what he calls "the authentic Wixárika, Mexica and Maya shamans."[1] At his ceremonial space in Playa del Carmen he hosts Hikuri ceremonies.[1] Hikuri is the Wixárika name for peyote, the cactus at the centre of Wixárika ceremony.
The connection runs through his music too. "Cantan los Marakames" on the 2023 album is named for the Marakame, the Wixárika singing shaman and healer.[3]
The strongest influence on his life was his grandmother, a woman from Oaxaca of Mixtec heritage. She taught him connection to the natural world and the power of healing, and his ancestral roots and family remain his greatest source of strength.[1]
He founded Colectivo Cultura Ancestral. With his family he works on preserving Mayan lands and heritage, and on eco-building initiatives in the Yucatán region.[1]
Alongside the music he leads cacao ceremonies and temazcal, the Mesoamerican sweat lodge. He describes himself as a "Musician, composer, Cacao and Temazcal ceremonies leader, social activist."[1]
