WITT Certified is a wellness certification for hotels and resorts, run by WITT, which stands for Wellness in Travel & Tourism. Properties are scored on more than 100 criteria across five pillars and certified for three years. The main alternatives are GHA WellHotel and Healing Hotels of the World for properties, and the Henosis Standard, which assesses the practitioners and leaders who hold the space.

What WITT Certified is

WITT describes itself as an independent certification program for hotels and resorts that provide amenities and services to enhance holistic wellbeing. What it says about itself:

  • What it certifies: hotels and resorts.
  • Criteria: more than 100 criteria points.
  • Five pillars: Healthy Eating, Holistic Healing, Nature, Movement and Local Impact.
  • Validity: three years, then renewal.
  • Process: according to its Why Certify page, a property applies, completes a self-assessment of targeted questions, then goes through a comprehensive virtual wellness audit with supporting documents, followed by an evaluation report and annual reviews.
  • Long-term levels: recertified properties can move to Gold (year 4), Platinum (year 7) and Diamond (year 10 and beyond).
  • Auditors: independent auditors conduct third-party evaluations, and completing the WITT AP programme is their mandatory first step.

WITT also publishes Core Wellness Standards for Hotels, a shorter framework of 12 requirements under the same five pillars, from filtered water throughout the property to access to green spaces and prioritising local supplies. The Wellness Tourism Association lists it on its media page as a joint announcement with WITT.

What WITT AP is

WITT AP stands for WITT Accredited Professional. It is a professional credential for people working in hospitality, travel, design, consulting and wellness who want verified expertise in wellness hospitality standards.

  • Format: 100% online and self-paced, with 15 hours of content.
  • Assessment: a final exam that is open-book, with multiple attempts allowed within the access period.
  • Result: a certificate, a digital badge and eligibility for the WITT AP Directory.

It certifies knowledge of the WITT framework, and it is also the first step for anyone who wants to audit for WITT.

The Six Principles for Responsible Retreats

The Wellness Tourism Association published the Six Principles for Responsible Retreats, developed by its Retreat Committee and released on 30 June 2026. The six:

  • Community, Culture and Environment

The WTA's own FAQ is clear that this is not a certification. It is an industry framework offering guidance and best practice, which retreat leaders, venues, marketplaces and advisors are encouraged to adopt. For a traveller it works as a checklist.

GHA WellHotel

Global Healthcare Accreditation runs WellHotel, which it calls a hospitality based wellness systems accreditation that does not score amenities or marketing claims.

  • What it accredits: hotels, resorts and rental properties.
  • Foundation: twenty core requirements covering governance, risk, training, environment, data privacy and sanitation.
  • Specialties: a property can add up to four Gold Leaves based on its specialty.
  • Process: hybrid, part virtual and part onsite, and performance based.

Healing Hotels of the World

Healing Hotels of the World was founded in 2006 by Anne Biging and Elisabeth Ixmeier and describes a collection of more than 100 hotels and resorts.

  • The mark: every member has earned Healing Certified by passing the Healing Excellence Standards.
  • Scope: more than 730 touch points across 12 operational areas, from guest room design to the training of practitioners to food sourcing.
  • Process: a virtual audit covering programmes, practitioners, environment, cuisine, sustainability and team culture.
  • Membership: three steps, contact, personal interview and evaluation, with a Resort Collection and an Urban Collection.

The honest difference

Every scheme above does real work. A guest who books a WITT Certified or Healing Certified property knows a third party has checked the food, the water, the programme and the building against published criteria. That matters.

What property criteria cannot fully tell you is who is in the room when you lie down on the mat. The Henosis Standard starts there.

Henosis is a global network of practitioners and spaces, each assessed by a human being against the Henosis Standard. The mark is earned, never bought.

  • Unit assessed. WITT, WellHotel and Healing Hotels assess the property. Henosis certifies practitioners as people, and assesses spaces and organisations by how far the understanding has travelled from the leaders into the staff and the operating policies.
  • Method. WITT uses a self-assessment and a virtual audit, WellHotel a hybrid review, Healing Hotels a virtual audit. At Henosis a human being sits with every practitioner, and organisations get deeper verification with site visits where warranted for the Conscious and Embodied standards.
  • What is measured. Property schemes count criteria and touch points. Henosis looks for whether a practitioner has done their own work, can show what changes for their clients, and is still reachable afterwards.
  • Who can hold it. WITT AP certifies what a professional knows. The Henosis Certified Practitioner mark cannot be applied for or paid for, and no training course leads to it.
  • Tiers. WITT tiers by years of recertification. Henosis tiers spaces as Awareness, Conscious and Embodied by depth, and does not tier practitioners at all.
  • Revocable. Henosis certification is assessed, awarded and revocable.

The schemes also sit together. A resort can hold a property certification for its standards and host Henosis certified practitioners for the work itself.

Questions

Is WITT Certified the same as the Six Principles for Responsible Retreats?

No. WITT Certified is a certification with an audit. The Six Principles are guidance from the Wellness Tourism Association, and its FAQ says they are not a certification.

Can a practitioner get WITT certified?

WITT Certified is for hotels and resorts. Individuals can take WITT AP, an online course with an open-book exam that credits knowledge of the WITT framework.

Can a hotel hold WITT Certified and the Henosis mark?
