Shamanic practitioner and psychopomp, nomadic across Asia
Isao Kato is a Japanese shamanic practitioner who works with the drum and rattle, and a member of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies' faculty for Asia and Oceania.[1][3] He has completed the Foundation's three-year programme and its shamanic healing training, and his specialisations are psychopomp work, guiding the dead onward, and house clearing.[2]
He offers soul retrieval, extraction, guardian spirit retrieval, psychopomp work and space clearing, in person or remotely.[1] Based out of Chiang Mai, Thailand, he has practised shamanic healing and divination for more than a decade.[2][4]
He came to this from a corporate career in engineering and technical writing.[1][5] He says the physical world is the dream, and dying is waking up.[4]
Isao grew up feeling out of step with the people around him, across the several countries he lived in.[1] He studied Electronic Engineering at Nagoya University and spent the mid-1990s into the 2010s in engineering and technical writing roles in Japan and Taiwan, latterly as a freelance technical writer based in Taiwan.[1][5]
An invitation to a plant medicine ceremony in Taiwan brought him in. After it he trained with the Foundation for Shamanic Studies in its sound-based method, which uses the drum and rattle and no plant medicine at all.[1] At first he struggled to reach an altered state without a substance to carry him there. The breakthrough came during psychopomp training, when he found himself "suddenly surrounded by dozens of souls, all asking for help."[1]
The Foundation's practitioner directory lists Isao in Chiang Mai, with completion of its three-year programme and its shamanic healing training programme, and a specialisation in psychopomp work and house clearing.[2]
He is also on the Foundation's faculty for Asia and Oceania, alongside Darren Swallow in Cambodia and Gai Anderson in Tasmania, in the region led by the Foundation's director there, Kevin Turner.[3]
His sessions run ninety minutes to two hours. They cover soul retrieval and extraction, which recover a dissociated part of a person or remove an unwanted energetic attachment; psychopomp work, guiding a deceased soul onward; house and space clearing; and guardian spirit retrieval.[1] No belief is required of the client. In his words, "Shamanism is a methodology, not a belief system."[1]
Isao divides contemporary shamanism into two broad streams. One works with plant medicines such as San Pedro or ayahuasca. The other uses the sound of drum and rattle to reach a lucid, dream-like state while staying conscious in the waking world. His practice is the second.[4]
Psychopomp work, as he does it, helps a soul that has not moved on to complete its passage. Sometimes that is a parent still hovering protectively over a living child, unaware that it has died.[4] In one session, what looked like an entity turned out to be an isolated part of the person. It needed welcoming back, and there was nothing to remove.[4]
He also runs a three-year shamanic healing training of his own.[1][2]
