Sacred Journey & Ancestral Traditions – San Luis Potosi
Welcome to an extraordinary journey to the heart of Mexico, San Luis Potosi, where ancient traditions and rituals are still cherished, and legends and tales remain alive. Here, you will experience the traditions of the indigenous Wix’arika people and get to know their culture.
The ancestors' practices maintain balance between humans and the forces of nature by honoring a relationship with those forces. As keepers of sacred knowledge, the Wix’arika traditional path is a deep work with medicine, seeing it as a teacher, a master that guides humanity from personal to collective healing. There are no boundaries between healing oneself and healing nature, allowing us to nurture the connection between humans and Earth.
Wix’arika and Wirikuta Desert
Wix’arika are an indigenous people of Mexico and the United States living in the Sierra Madre Occidental range in the states of Nayarit, San Luis Potosi, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango, as well as in the Southern United States in the States of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Better known internationally by their Spanish name, the Huicholes, although in their native language they refer to themselves as Wixaritari – “the people”.
They originated from San Luis Potosi. According to carbon dating of the ashes from their ceremonial fireplaces, the Wix’arika have been in this region for at least 15,000 years.
The ritual of collecting and consuming peyote in this land is literally woven into their origin story.
Wirikuta – the Sierra de Catorce mountain range and the desert at its feet is one of their most sacred sites – the Birthplace of the Sun. The UNESCO-designated site of the Wirikuta is one of the most biodiverse deserts on the planet.
The Peyote Story
Kauyumari, the Blue Deer, is the spirit who guides the Wix’aritari and sacrifices himself to transform into Hikuri, the Peyote cactus.
For at least 15,000 years, the Wix’arika people have been collecting and consuming peyote on their sacred lands.
Ceremonies will be held by mara’akame – shamans, healers, and guides on a spiritual path.
In their mythology, the gods and goddesses taught the deer in ancient times. It was the first student of Shamanism, the first to learn the secrets of the original shaman, Tatewari – Grandfather Fire.
The deer is seen as an elder brother, a guide, which the shamans use to navigate the spirit realm and also for healing and remains the most important animal in their religion.
Hikuri Ceremonies
In the traditional Wix’arika ceremony, participants gather at night around Tatewari, the Grandfather Fire, where the Wix’aritari connect through Peyote with their ancestors, receiving blessings, healing, and messages from the spirit of the medicine.
Every year, the Wix’arika people make a pilgrimage to the sacred desert of Wirikuta, the central point of their religious rituals, to collect the Hikuri, make offerings in sacred places, honor their religion, gather sacred waters, celebrate around the fire, and connect with the wisdom they need to live their lives.
We will gather all night around the fire to connect with the spirit of the medicine, listen to music, and celebrate.

Cenote – The Cavern with Water
Cenotes, the enchanting jewels of the Yucatan Peninsula, offer a magical and mysterious adventure nestled in the jungle. These deep water wells, called “Dz’onot” by the Mayans, meaning ‘cavern with water,’ are fed by rain filtration and underground river currents. Swimming in these natural sinkholes provides a refreshing experience, with an average water temperature of 24°C. Formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, cenotes are captivating underground chambers that make an unforgettable exploration.
Mayans believe that cenote water regulates body temperature and restores natural balance.
Temazcal – The Mexican Sweat Lodge
The Temazcal, also known as the Mexican sweat lodge, is a traditional healing ritual that dates back to pre-Hispanic times. It is a small, dome-shaped structure made of wood, adobe, or stone, with a small entrance.
The word “Temazcal” comes from the Nahuatl language and means “house of heat.”
The Temazcal ceremony is a powerful and unique form of traditional healing that has been practiced for centuries in Mexico and other parts of the Americas.
During the ceremony, participants sit inside and are led through a series of rituals, chants, and prayers by a trained facilitator – a “temazcalero.”
The facilitator pours water onto hot rocks in the center of the Temazcal, creating steam that raises the temperature and humidity inside the lodge. Tradition refers to a feeling of coming back to the womb of a mother, both as a physical act and a spiritual act of reconnecting to Mother Nature.
The Temazcal ceremony, using heat and steam, is believed to purify the body, mind, and spirit. Participants release negative emotions and physical toxins through sweating and breathing exercises, making it a spiritual and physical cleansing ritual that promotes relaxation and healing.
Sacred Cacao Ceremony
The term ‘Cacao’ originates from the Mayan words ‘Ka’kau’, signifying ‘heart blood’, and ‘Chokola’j’, meaning “to drink together”. This connection to the heart stems from the belief that Mayan gods infused cacao pods with their blood, considering cacao a vital element in the creation of humanity. The scientific genus name, Theobroma, translates to “Food of the Gods”, aligning with the Mayan conviction that cacao plays a pivotal role in restoring balance and connection to the divine.
A Mayan legend imparts that cacao emerges from the rainforest to open hearts and restore harmony whenever there is an imbalance between humans and nature. Shamans view cacao as the ‘food for the shift’, symbolizing a new era of love and peace currently unfolding.
In modern times, cacao ceremonies, rooted in ancestral practices, are conducted as communal experiences led by trained facilitators or shamans. These ceremonies aim to foster inspiration and human connection, embracing the rich cultural legacy of cacao.
